Amid major problems in the film distribution industry, Warner Bros. decided to take a chance and still release the superhero fantasy “Wonder Woman 1984” / “Wonder Woman: 1984” with Gal Gadot in the title role.
The premiere of the film will take place in a hybrid form – subscribers of the branded streaming service HBO Max will be able to see it at no additional charge on December 25, 2020, on the same day the film will be released in those US cinemas that still operate under quarantine restrictions, but with overseas distribution, the situation is a little more complicated.
Warner Bros. said that in countries where HBO Max is not yet available, the film distribution of “Wonder Woman 1984” / “Wonder Woman: 1984” will start a week before the American premiere on December 16, 2020. However, the premiere date may also vary from country to country due to local quarantine restrictions. In Ukraine, the preliminary release date of the film is set for December 16, 2020.

Note that the decision to release a potential blockbuster in the current environment can be very successful and completely disastrous. With a $ 200 million budget, analysts predicted a film collection of at least $ 1 billion for the film, but in current conditions, this level is practically unattainable.
On the one hand, the “instant” premiere in HBO Max will attract more subscribers to this service, and the absence of worthy competitors in the film distribution will increase the attendance of cinemas. On the other hand, the film’s presence in the digital distribution service will lead to inevitable piracy, and the financial results of the film in countries with a high level of illegal viewing will be below the most cautious forecasts.
Recall that almost all major Hollywood studios have postponed the premieres of large-budget films for 2021-2022. In particular, this affected the films “No Time to Die” (April 2, 2021), “F9: Fast and Furious” (May 28, 2021), Dune (October 1, 2021), Matrix 4 (December 22, 2021), The Batman (4 March 2022), etc.
