On October 20, Tesla, as promised, launched a closed beta test in the US for the next major update to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) autopilot, in which the software component of the system was completely redesigned. The rollout of the relevant update among a limited number of users specially selected for the beta test, the head of Tesla, Elon Musk, confirmed on his Twitter, stressing that the company will proceed with extreme caution and without unnecessary haste, as is required in such cases.

Recall that at the end of 2015, Elon Musk said that Tesla cars will become completely self-driving and will be able to move without any driver assistance in two years. Over the past few months, Elon Musk has been relentlessly teasing everyone. a fundamentally new Tesla autopilot, with which the proprietary system will grow to the highest fifth level, calling it Tesla Autopilot 4D and the “quantum leap”. Last week Musk promised the start of closed beta testing on October 20, and this time he kept his word.

It is not yet clear what the “Full Self-Driving Beta” update includes in terms of functionality, but it is expected to expand the capabilities of the proactive Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control by adding cornering corners. Using the advanced functionality of Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control in tandem with Navigate on Autopilot, which is responsible for selecting the most optimal route to the destination, Tesla cars will technically be able to move both on roads within the city and on highways without the participation of a driver.

A broader beta test of the new autopilot is set to kick off in 4-6 weeks, with a final launch in the US slated for mid-December.

Apparently, we are talking about the package “feature complete»Full Self-Driving (fully self-driving with a full package of functions) – we talked about it in detail in this post. The launch of the promised Tesla Network robotic taxi service with 1 million self-driving cars, which the company originally planned to launch in 2020, will depend on the implementation of full Full Self-Driving.

According to the initial idea, at the first stage, the Robotaxi service will work with insuring drivers. Based on the results of testing, Tesla plans to obtain the necessary data to develop a model of a fully autonomous service and contact the regulator to obtain an appropriate license. Musk has previously said cautiously that he expects to achieve some of the goals in 2021.

It remains to add that later today Tesla will publish a financial report for the last quarter and, probably, at a conference call after the report, Elon Musk, as usual, will talk about immediate plans and, possibly, shed light on the recently seen mysterious Tesla car in camouflage not far from a Los Angeles-based design studio company.
