Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 is the World’s first QLED Chromebook- starting at $550

Without waiting for the formal opening of CES 2021 (will be held in the format from January 11-14), Samsung presented Premium ultra-slim 2-in-1 Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2, built with Intel Project Athena. This is an update to last year’s Galaxy Chromebook, which debuted at CES 2020 and is remembered for its vibrant orange colorway, among other things.

The original model’s main disadvantages were not enough good autonomy, a weak cooling system, and a high price. When developing a new model, the manufacturer seems to have heeded the criticism.

Initially, Evan Blass estimated the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 would retail for $699.

The new model has a slightly updated design – the entire body is now painted in the main color, including the side edges (the second generation model’s keyboard unit remains neutral black). In addition to the bright orange (Fiesta Red), a dark gray (Mercury Gray) is also available. The novelty also received improved characteristics and stood out primarily for the screen – the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 became the first Chromebook with a 13.3-inch QLED screen. In this case, a touch panel with a 1920 × 1080 pixels resolution is used, while last year’s model was equipped with an OLED 4K UHD screen. In addition to supporting input with your fingers, you can use the stylus to operate the screen USI Pen (Universal Stylus Initiative) with 4096 pressure level recognition.

Contrary to expectations, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 did not upgrade to Intel’s current Tiger Lake mobile platform with integrated Iris Xe graphics. The laptop’s base version is built based on an energy-efficient 15-watt Intel Celeron 5205U (2 cores / 2 threads, 1.9 GHz) with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of flash memory – a positive point here is the affordable price of 550. At the same time, the original model Galaxy Chromebooks cost at least $ 1,000. For a surcharge of $ 150, you can get a version with a more efficient Intel Core i3 10110U chip (2 cores / 4 threads, 2.1 / 4,1 GHz), 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of flash memory.

The Galaxy Chromebook 2 also includes 10W stereo speakers with Smart AMP support, a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 adapters, a 720p webcam, and a couple of USB ports.

The Galaxy Chromebook 2 has a battery capacity of 45.5 Wh, which should be enough for 14 hours of battery life. The case is only 13.9 mm thick and weighs 1220 grams.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 will start shipping in the US from late March 2021.
