The late summer-early fall period tends to provide good sales to laptop makers as the back to school season is in full swing. If you have not yet had time to buy yourself a work machine for study and work, I advise you to pay attention to the new VivoBook model from ASUS, which we will discuss in more detail in this review.
Complete set ASUS VivoBook S15 M533I
The laptop comes in a regular cardboard box, inside which you will find the device itself, a 45 W power supply, several bright stickers and various documentation.
Appearance and usability
I love the way ASUS approaches the positioning of their laptop lines. If ZenBooks are premium devices and you don’t really experiment with colours there, then the more affordable VivoBook series allows you to get creative, because it covers a much larger number of potential customers. Someone will be more suitable for a strict black laptop, but there will certainly be users who will appreciate brighter colours – green, crimson, or as white as they came to our review.
But I dare to assume that this particular colour will appeal to girls more because under different lighting the laptop lid shimmers with pink shades. It looks smart, and the bevelled anodized edges around the perimeter of the keyboard cover add elegance to the device.
In general, the metal case gives the ASUS VivoBook S15 M533I premium, although I note that this model cannot boast of all the features of the line. For example, there is no proprietary ErgoLift hinge that lifts the back of the laptop. Instead, oversized rubber feet are provided.
The frame around the display is made of plastic. Its thickness, of course, is not the smallest in the class, but it looks quite normal. Device dimensions: 359x233x16 mm. Weight – 1.8 kg. Good performance for a 15 “device.
The VivoBook S15’s interfaces are in order. There is USB-C 3.2 (Gen 1), USB-A 3.2 (Gen 1), two USB-A 2.0, HDMI, 3.5mm audio jack, microSD slot. Perhaps, only the memory card slot confuses – I think there was enough space inside the laptop to accommodate a full-fledged SD reader.
Display ASUS VivoBook S15 M533I
The VivoBook S15 has a 15.6-inch matte LCD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Stated 100% coverage of the sRGB colour space. The matrix used is made by LG Display, model LP156WFC-SPD1. There are no special complaints about the quality of the picture, only the colour scheme goes into warm tones. The backlighting of the matrix is uniform, I would like a little more margin of maximum brightness, which according to our measurements is 220 cd / m2.
Iron and performance
The M-series within the VivoBook S lineup includes two models so far: S14 M433I and S15 M533I. These notebooks are exclusively equipped with processors manufactured by AMD. You can choose from Ryzen 5 4500U or Ryzen 7 4700U… In both cases, AMD Radeon integrated graphics will be available. RAM can be installed 8 GB or 16 GB (DDR4, 3200 MHz). For data storage, there is a PCIe SSD-drive with a capacity of 256 GB to 1 TB.
In our case, almost a top-end modification: Ryzen 7, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD. Such hardware obviously cannot be called gaming, but for ordinary office tasks, it is an excellent tool. Performance tests have only confirmed this. I note the presence of a fairly fast drive that produces 2277 MB / s for reading and 1177 MB / s for writing. There was no throttling in the AIDA stress test.
However, if you want to play, the VivoBook S15 M533I will try to help with that. In the relatively old DiRT Rally at maximum settings, the laptop gave out a playable 25-30 fps. But what impressed me, even more, was the launch of F1 2018 at ultra settings. Of course, 15-18 fps will not bring much pleasure, but you can set the graphics settings to medium and safely go to fight for the championship in royal races.
The Realtek 8821CE Wireless LAN 802.11 ac module is responsible for the wireless connection in our instance, but a Wi-Fi 6 module can also be installed. There is also Bluetooth 5.0. The cooling system periodically makes itself felt, but not that critically loud. The case is mainly heated on the left side of the keyboard.
Keyboard, touchpad, multimedia
VivoBook S15 M533I features a full-size keyboard with 1.4mm key travel. Three-level white backlighting available. Conveniently, there is a separate Num-block of keys. Well, the Enter button, painted along the perimeter in a bright light green colour, adds a little zest. The function keys are enabled by default, but if you prefer F-keys, you can change the setting in the MyASUS app or by using the Fn + Esc combination.
The touchpad is large and easy to use. There is protection against accidental palm touches. Gestures are supported (up to four fingers). At the top, the touchpad is hardly pressed. Probably the reason for this decision is that in some modifications a fingerprint scanner may be integrated into the touchpad. This, by the way, is not the most convenient option for its placement. This laptop is not equipped with an infrared camera for unlocking the user’s face, so you will have to enter the password each time or select the version with a fingerprint scanner.
There are two speakers on the bottom cover. Despite the “Sound by Harman / Kardon” nameplate, they do not show anything extraordinary. They sound good, there is a sufficient volume margin. It is quite usual, as for its segment.
Autonomy ASUS VivoBook S15 M533I
The laptop is equipped with a 50Wh battery. In the PCMark test, the VivoBook S15 M533I achieved a very good 8 hours and 15 minutes. In real conditions, the device lasted for about 4-5 hours at 100% brightness, respectively, you can count on almost a working day, if you slightly lower the brightness and choose a more gentle power consumption mode. The only thing missing is USB-C charging support.
