Today’s presentation showed several new iPhone models, the oldest of which were the iPhone 12 Pro and its larger version, the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Fortunately or unfortunately, there were no big surprises, since the details about the gadgets appeared before the presentation, but now you can understand with precision what awaits buyers of the most expensive iPhone options of the new line.
For starters, the smartphone got an updated design – Pro Design. The body still consists of a steel frame and glass panels at the front and back. The sides have changed and are now flat, not rounded.
The iPhone can now be submerged under water up to 6 meters (but the company will certainly not cover leakage cases with a guarantee as before). Also added to the smartphone are magnets for the MagSafe induction charging stations, which appeared for all new iPhones.
But MagSafe can be used with other accessories, such as smartphone cases or payment cards.
The Pro model now comes in four color options: Silver, Graphite, Gold and Pacific Blue. The size of the new products is quite similar to the previous ones with enlarged screens: 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.4 mm with a weight of 189 grams for the iPhone 12 Pro, and 160.8 × 78.1 × 7.4 mm with a weight of 228 grams for models Max.
The screens of both flagship models received 6.1 and 6.7 inches diagonals. The iPhone 12 Pro has a resolution of 2532 × 1170 pixels (470 ppi), and on the larger screen – 2778 × 1284 pixels (458 ppi). And of course, these are OLED matrices with a contrast ratio of 2,000,000: 1 and a maximum brightness of 1200 nits.
The Super Retina XDR display supports the already well-established True Tone and Haptic Touch technologies, and also displays images in the Wide Color P3 color space.
The notch in the screen has not disappeared yet and everything is also used for the front camera and a set of sensors for quick unlocking by face scanning – Face ID. The fingerprint scanner in the power button or under the screen, flagship iPhone users will have to wait.
Inside the smartphones, new A14 chips are installed, consisting of a 6-core CPU, a 4-core graphics accelerator, a 16-core Neural Engine, and an Image Signal Processor. There is also support for 5G networks (which is not very relevant in our reality). The new iPhones have one SIM card slot and support eSIMs with it.
The minimum memory for Apple flagships is now 128 GB, and both subsequent levels of capacity remain 256 and 512 GB. This, as always, affects the cost of the device. So, the basic version of the iPhone 12 Pro costs $ 999, with a subsequent rise in the price of storage in $ 1099 and $ 1299, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will cost $ 1099, $ 1199 and $ 1399.
Apple still does not indicate the exact battery capacity, but the column “Autonomy” says that the new models can play video from the Network for 11 and 12 hours, and play audio up to 65 and 80 hours, respectively. At the same time, fast charging is supported, but for this you will have to buy a more powerful power supply, or charge the smartphone from a laptop power supply. No more power supply included. And from now on, USB-C-to-Lightning cables are shipped with the iPhone, making fast charging easier for Apple laptop owners.
Both models received three main cameras, but the modules are slightly different. The iPhone 12 Pro uses:
- 12-megapixel wide-angle with ƒ / 1.6 aperture, OIS, 7-element lens and 26mm focal length;
- 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle ƒ / 2.4 aperture, 120 degree viewing angle, electronic stabilization, 5-element lens and 13 mm focal length;
- 12 megapixel telephoto with ƒ / 2.0 aperture, OIS, 6-element lens and 52mm focal length, which provides optical zoom up to 4x.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a slightly more advanced set of modules, with the exception of the “super-wide” one:
- 12MP wide-angle camera with ƒ / 1.6 aperture, 26mm focal length, 7-element lens, but a larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels and a new stabilization system. The latter does not stabilize the lenses, as in optical systems, but the matrix itself, which, according to Apple, should improve the quality of photos and videos;
- 12-megapixel telephoto camera with ƒ / 2.2 aperture, OIS, 65mm focal length and up to 2.5x optical zoom;
- 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle ƒ / 2.4 aperture, 120-degree viewing angle, electronic stabilization, 5-element lens and 13mm focal length.

The cameras in iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max support Deep Fusion technology, which stitches together multiple images taken at different settings using machine learning. And also night mode, which allows, through machine processing, to improve the quality of photos taken in low light.
The front-facing camera in both models is 12-megapixel TrueDepth with f / 2.2 aperture, support for portrait photography, Deep Fusion technology and night mode.
All four cameras in smartphones can now shoot 4K video up to 60 frames per second, including HDR video with Dolby Vision up to 30 frames per second.
Of the big innovations in the cameras of the new iPhones, the use of lidar is also worth noting. This sensor allows devices to determine the distance to objects even in the dark and at the same time works faster than laser autofocus.
This allows cameras to capture portrait shots with a blurred background, even in low light conditions. In addition, lidar increases the accuracy of the augmented reality application by more correctly determining the position of virtual objects in space.
Later this year, Apple is promising to add support for the new Apple ProRAW format to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, which should combine the power of uncompressed RAW with Apple’s computer photography technology. The company says the user will have more control over color, detail and dynamic range when processing Apple ProRAW images right on the iPhone.
At the same time, support for editing the new format should appear not only in the standard Apple Photo application, but also in third-party editors.
