Method 3: No Key, No Subscription | Office 365

Step 1: Sign in to Office.com

The first step to accessing Microsoft Office on Mac for free is heading to the official Microsoft portal.

  1. Open any web browser on your Mac (Safari, Chrome, or Edge).
  2. Navigate to Office.com.
  3. Click on Sign in at the top right corner.
  4. Enter your Microsoft account credentials. If you don’t have an account, click Create one—it’s completely free and takes just a few seconds.

Once you are signed in, you will land on the Microsoft 365 homepage.

Step 2: Explore the Free Web Apps

On the left panel of the screen, you will see the Apps section. Click on it to reveal the full suite of Microsoft applications available to you.

You will see:

  • Word
  • Excel

At this point, you can click on any app—for example, Word—and start using it directly in your browser. Everything runs in the cloud, so you don’t have to install anything locally.

However, working inside a browser tab every time can be a hassle. Fortunately, there is a way to convert these web apps into dedicated application shortcuts on your Mac.

Step 3: Convert Web Apps to Standalone Mac Apps

To make accessing Microsoft Office on Mac for free feel just like using the native desktop version, we will create standalone app shortcuts using your browser. I will demonstrate this using Google Chrome, but the process is similar on Safari and Edge.

Install Microsoft Word as an App

  1. Open Microsoft Word in your Chrome browser.
  2. Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of Chrome.
  3. Navigate to Cast, Save, and Share.
  4. Select Install Page as App.
  5. A pop-up window will appear. Name it Microsoft Word and click Install.

Once installed, Microsoft Word will open in a separate window, independent of your browser tabs.

Repeat for Excel and PowerPoint

Now, repeat the exact same process for:

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

After completing these steps, you will have dedicated apps for all three major Office programs.

Pro Tip: By default, these shortcuts are stored in a hidden Chrome Apps folder. Keep this Finder window open if you want to move them later.

Step 4: Launch and Sign In

Now comes the exciting part—testing your newly created apps.

  1. Click on the Microsoft Word app icon you just created.
  2. Click Create Blank Document to start a new file.
  3. On your first login, you will be prompted to sign in with your Microsoft account again. This is a one-time step. Once authenticated, the app will remember you.

You will immediately notice that the interface is almost identical to the desktop version. You can:

  • Type and format text.
  • Insert tables and images.
  • Use spell check and word count.
  • Create professional documents effortlessly.

Step 5: Save and Export Your Work

One of the best features of this free method is seamless cloud integration.

Automatic Saving to OneDrive

All your documents are automatically saved to OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage service. With your free Microsoft account, you get 5 GB of storage space—more than enough for documents and spreadsheets.

Exporting to Your Mac

If you want a local copy on your hard drive:

  1. Click on File in the top menu.
  2. Select Save As or Export.
  3. Choose PDF or any other format.
  4. The file will be downloaded directly to your Mac’s local drive.

You can also share files directly from the menu with collaborators, similar to Google Docs.

Step 6: Pin Apps to Your Dock for Quick Access

To make your workflow even faster, pin these apps to your Dock:

  1. Open the Chrome Apps folder (or locate the apps in your Applications folder).
  2. Drag the app icons (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) down to your Dock.
  3. They will now stay there permanently, allowing you to launch them with a single click.

How to Access All Your Documents

If you want to view all your saved files in one place:

  1. Open any app (e.g., Word).
  2. Click on Show all documents.
  3. This will display your entire OneDrive file structure, making it easy to open recent or shared documents.

The Only Drawback (And a Workaround)

It’s important to be transparent. The main limitation of this method is that you need an active internet connection every time you use the apps. Since everything runs via the cloud, offline access is not available.

However, if you prefer to use Microsoft Office offline on your Mac with the full native desktop experience, check out the 2 methods above.

Other Free MS Office Alternatives for MAC

An alternative to MS Office is Google Workspace, a free, straightforward suite of tools, the most popular online tool. It is not equipped with super-advanced features like MS Office, but it will be more than enough for most users.

We also recommend free, open-source software that offers an excellent alternative to MS Office. The interface isn’t very pretty, but you can do practically everything.

We personally love FreeOffice for Windows, Mac, and Linux from SoftMaker. Try it out; you will undoubtedly agree it is the best free alternative to Microsoft Office.

You can also use the Microsoft 365 free trial period. You can enjoy all their programs for a month. This trail includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and Skype. The subscription costs €10 per month or €99 per year, so we recommend canceling it before the trial ends if you don’t want to be charged automatically.

  1. Hi,

I tried to install office to my Mac according to your manual, but after installation both (installer and Serializer) and both installations went successful, but after opening the word or excel it is still written that I can use it only for reading!
    Can you help me?

    • Hi,

I just tried downloading and installing it. Seems tobe working fine at my end.

      Things to keep in mind:
      1. Do not run any office tool before running the Serializer. You need to run both together without running any Office tool.
      2. Do not Sign-in to your Microsoft account when it asks. Just skip the step.
      3. Do not update.

Try these and let me know if it works.

      Thanks
