Step 1: Prepare Your Video File
- Source your video: Use screen recordings, YouTube downloads (ensure copyright compliance), personal clips, or live wallpaper websites.
- Optimize the video: For best results, use a 4K SDR 240fps file. Resize or convert videos using tools like VideoBolt.
- Save the video to an easily accessible folder (e.g., Downloads).
- Convert your video to MOV: If you have a video file that is different from the MOV format. Go to the CloudConvert website and change your file format to MOV. Once the file is converted, download it.
- Now, your video file is ready to be used. I have renamed the file to final.mov.
Step 2: Locate macOS’s Live Wallpaper Directory
- Open Finder and click Go > Computer in the top menu.
- Navigate to Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > com.apple.idleassetsd > Customer.
Note: The “Library” folder is hidden by default. Press Cmd + Shift + G and paste the path if needed.
- Inside the Customer folder, locate subfolders like 4K SDR 240FPS. These store Apple’s default live wallpapers. For now, this folder will be empty.
Step 3: Download Default Live Wallpapers (for Reference)
- Open System Settings > Wallpaper.
- Scroll to the Landscape section under “Live Wallpapers.”
- Download one default wallpaper (e.g., Sonoma Horizon) by clicking their download icons (↓). Download will take around 3-4 minutes, depending on your internet connection.
- Once downloaded, you can see the same wallpaper MOV file in the 4K SDR 240FPS folder.
Step 4: Replace Default Wallpapers with Your Custom Video
- Copy the filename of a downloaded default wallpaper:
- Right-click the file (e.g.,
FE876489-CBD5-479B-A8F0-1B67F0741CEA) > Rename > Copy the name without the extension (e.g., “FE876489-CBD5-479B-A8F0-1B67F0741CEA”).
- Rename your custom video:
- Drag your video (e.g.,
Final.mov) into the 4K SDR 240FPS folder.
- Delete the original default wallpaper file (e.g.,
FE876489-CBD5-479B-A8F0-1B67F0741CEA).
- Rename your video to match the copied filename (e.g.,
FE876489-CBD5-479B-A8F0-1B67F0741CEA).
- Important: Do not add a file extension. The system recognizes it automatically.
- Grant permission to modify the folder if prompted.
Step 5: Activate Your Custom Live Wallpaper
- Go to your Settings>Wallpapers and set the exact same wallpaper (Sonoma Horizon) that you downloaded. As soon as you apply the wallpaper, you will see your MOV applied as a wallpaper.
- Close System Settings and let your Mac enter sleep mode (or lock the screen).
- Wake your Mac. The live wallpaper should now play your custom video.
Troubleshooting Tips
- No animation? Ensure your video matches Apple’s specs (4K SDR 240FPS).
- Black Screen? Once you apply your custom live wallpaper and lock your screen, you will see your live wallpaper in effect. Once you are logged in, your wallpaper will turn black. Ignore it! Try restarting your MacBook; after restart, go back to the lock screen, and your live wallpaper will still work. If you lock the screen twice, the second time, it won’t work. You need to restart your MAC again for the live wallpaper to function.
