In this article, we will learn How to set up auto-delete messages in regular Telegram chats. Even though Telegram and WhatsApp belong to the same category of applications, their functional device differs significantly. Moreover, each party believes that its product deserves to be called a truly thought out and, importantly, protected messenger. Personally, the Telegram approach is closer to me, but this does not mean that it is designed perfectly and devoid of flaws. Not at all. It’s just that Pavel Durov’s wards are more loyal to the requirements of users and develop the service taking into account their needs. For example, as is the case with auto-delete messages in regular Telegram chats.
Auto-delete messages in regular Telegram chats is now available.
With the last Telegram update release, which added support for widgets and several new features, the messenger allows auto-delete messages in regular Telegram chats. In fact, such a feature existed before but was only available in secret chats, protected by end-to-end encryption.
How to enable auto-delete messages in Telegram
Users could set the deletion period themselves, which was very convenient if it was necessary to hide the fact of some conversation. There is an auto-delete messages mechanism in regular chats, which users have been asking Telegram developers for. It seems, for several years, wanting to erase their messages after the fact.
You can enable auto-delete messages in Telegram in the following way:
- Go to the chat for which you want to set up auto-deletion;
- Hold your finger on the message, and then press “Select”;
Auto-delete messages in regular chats is available only after 1 day and after 1 week.
- In the upper left corner, click “Delete chat” – “Configure auto-deletion”;
- Configure the auto-deletion period for messages and click Finish.
It is important to understand that automatic message deletion applies to all messages in the selected chat sent thereafter. This mechanism is enabled. That is, all old messages, regardless of who sent them, that were there earlier, will remain, and all new ones will be forcibly erased after a specified time.
The countdown of the time until the auto-delete mechanism is triggered starts from sending and not from the moment of reading. However, there is no possibility to choose per-second, per-minute, or hourly timing. The developers have provided only three-time gradations, of which only two can be considered real: never, 1 day, or 1 week.
How to create a secret chat in Telegram?
Why the developers decided not to make more frequent triggering of the auto-delete mechanism is not clear. Apparently, the calculation was that ordinary chats are still not the same as secret ones, and there is simply no need to delete messages that users send there at precise intervals. I cannot explain it otherwise. Therefore, if you need messages to be deleted earlier than after 1 day or a week, use secret chats.
It’s effortless to start a secret chat on Telegram:
- Go to the any chat;
- Click on his profile icon at the very top;
In secret chats, auto-deletion can be configured to the nearest second.
- Click on the “More” button – “Start a secret chat“;
- In the message set line, select a time to delete messages.
As you can see, there are many more time gradations available here than in regular chats. But this is understandable. Secret chats are generally used for conversations that need maximum protection. Messages in such chats are protected with end-to-end encryption, and auto-deletion is also used as an additional layer of security. However, remember that nothing prevents your interlocutor at the other end from either taking a screenshot or simply rewriting your messages’ content.
There is no point in resorting to this communication method under normal conditions because it is too inconvenient. However, if you think that someone might have reason to spy on you and try to intercept your regular correspondence, you can try to secure chats. There is even a screenshot detector that notifies your interlocutor about the creation of a screenshot. True, it was impossible to prohibit their creation in such chats. In principle, it is not clear. Moreover, Android has had this limitation for a long time.
