It is relatively easy to explain what Digital Detox is (in translation – “digital detoxification”) – it is a conscious rejection of digital devices, such as computers, smartphones, or tablets, for a while or only in individual rooms.
Many people already realize that they have become addicted to their phones. This becomes especially noticeable when you forget your phone at home. The feeling of helplessness, thoughts always revolve around the phone, and the hand reaches for it, even though it lies at home – many are familiar with such symptoms.
Also, overuse of gadgets can cause stress – the endless stream of news, photos, and videos from social media strains our brains. And the blue light that smartphone displays emit negatively affects vision and can cause sleep problems.
A complete rejection of digital technology these days would be equivalent to a retirement from society. Therefore, a partial denial of them is more realistic. But where to start if you want to cut back on your techie?
Getting rid of digital addiction: 6 tips
1. In the first step, try disabling all push notifications on your mobile phone and computer. This way, you can decide for yourself when to read new messages and study further information.
2. Eliminate the need to respond to messages instantly. And from your loved ones and friends, do not demand an immediate response to any messages if you find it challenging to take and stop checking social networks every five minutes immediately. Set aside a particular time for this: for example, at the beginning of every hour or once every 2 hours.
3. With the help of specific applications, you can track your screen time. They will allow you to see how often and for how long you use different programs. This function is built into modern mobile operating systems and separate applications – for example, you can find out the amount of time spent directly from Instagram. As a last resort, you can temporarily disable or restrict applications using the same screen time feature.
4. Try not to start your morning by checking for new messages. The best thing is to create a regular alarm and leave your smartphone away from the pillow to not reach for it immediately after waking up.
5. Create smartphone-free spaces at home, or choose when you aren’t using your phone and PC. For example, agree with your family members that social media is not allowed during meals or in the bedroom.
6. Go on vacation where there is no free Wi-Fi and cheap internet. When traveling by train, try looking out the window rather than the display. Allow yourself to experience what is happening around you. As psychologists say: live in the here and now, not on the phone.
