Resource Tom’s Hardware checked the performance level of the most modern video cards of the GeForce RTX 30 and Radeon RX 6000 series in the latest game Cyberpunk 2077. And although the game will go on sale only on December 10, the information embargo has already been lifted, and reviewers can publish their reviews.
The game supports ray tracing and super-resolution technologies. So far, the latter is available only in the form of NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), and AMD has not yet presented its FidelityFX Super-Resolution solution for games. Ray tracing is also currently only supported by NVIDIA RTX graphics cards, and support for the Radeon RX 6000 will appear in the future. The game offers various options for using DLSS, but the default settings are High Image Quality at 1080p, Balanced Mode at 1440p, and Performance Mode at 4K.
The test platform includes an Intel Core i9-9900K processor, but an older 4-core Core i7-7700K processor was used for some tests. However, the tested version of the game used Denuvo protection, which could affect performance. The version for GOG Galaxy will be released without DRM protection. Testing was conducted with various graphics quality settings and image resolution options. The results are presented in the form of comparative graphs. However, some special cases need to be dealt with in more detail.
Cyberpunk 2077 appears to be CPU limited at 1080p and 1440p. It looks like there is a 104-108 frames per second limit that none of the graphics cards in this roundup can overcome. At 1080p, the Radeon RX 6800XT offers the best performance, but once the resolution is upscaled to 4K, NVIDIA GPUs show a clear advantage.
On the Ultra charts, different colors represent different test parameters.
At 4K resolution, none of the graphics cards are capable of 60fps with Ultra graphics quality settings. In this rasterization test without ray tracing or with DLSS, the GeForce RTX 3090 is 36% faster than the Radeon RX 6800 XT. Simultaneously, the GeForce RTX 3090 with ray tracing set to Medium (no DLSS) cannot provide a playable result, and the image refresh rate is 26.7 frames per second.
Tom’s Hardware reviewers have tested various DLSS settings in detail. It turned out that with the Ultra ray tracing setting, only the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 model can break the 60fps barrier at DLSS Ultra Performance settings.
