If you have an older computer that is beginning to show its age, you are not alone. Many users find themselves in a situation where their hardware is still functional, but the operating system has become sluggish, or, worse, is blocked from receiving the latest updates due to hardware requirements such as TPM 2.0.

Upgrading to a new machine is not always a practical or financially sound decision. Fortunately, there is an alternative that offers the modern interface and security foundation of Windows 11 without the associated performance overhead.

In this guide, I will walk you through the process of performing a Clean Install Tiny11. This is a streamlined, unofficial version of Windows 11 designed to run efficiently on systems with limited resources. The entire installation process takes approximately 15 minutes and does not require you to sacrifice the data stored on your secondary drives.

What Makes Tiny11 a Practical Choice?

Before we begin the technical steps, it is helpful to understand why many users are turning to this solution. The differences between a standard Windows 11 installation and Tiny11 are significant and directly impact performance on older machines.

• Reduced Storage Footprint: A standard Windows 11 installation consumes approximately 50GB of drive space before any additional software is installed. A Clean Install Tiny11 occupies roughly 20GB. • Hardware Compatibility: Microsoft’s official stance requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for Windows 11. Tiny11 bypasses these checks natively. This makes it an ideal candidate for hardware manufactured before 2017 that is otherwise perfectly capable of running the operating system.
• Simplified Setup: The installation wizard lets you bypass the mandatory Microsoft Account sign-in, allowing you to set up a traditional local user profile without any workarounds.

Preparation: What You Will Need to Clean Install Tiny11

To ensure a smooth process, please gather the following items before proceeding.

As with any operating system installation, I strongly recommend backing up any critical data located on your Desktop, Documents, or Downloads folders to an external drive or a separate internal partition (such as a D: drive). 

The partition where Windows is currently installed (C:) will be formatted entirely.

1. USB Flash Drive: A drive with a minimum capacity of 8GB. Please note that this drive will be formatted, so ensure it does not contain any important files.

3. Rufus Utility: A free, open-source tool used for creating bootable USB media.

Step 1: Creating the Bootable USB Drive with Rufus

This is the most critical preparation step. Rufus allows us to write the ISO file to the USB drive while simultaneously applying configuration scripts that ensure compatibility with unsupported hardware.

1. Connect your USB drive to the computer.
2. Launch the Rufus executable (no installation is necessary).
3. Under the Device section, verify that your USB drive is selected.
4. Under Boot Selection, click the SELECT button and navigate to the location of your Tiny11 ISO file.

4. Click the START button at the bottom of the window.
5. A dialog titled Windows User Experience will appear. This is where we configure the installation to work seamlessly with older hardware. I recommend selecting the following options:
   • Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0: Essential for bypassing hardware checks.
   • Remove requirement for an online Microsoft account: This enables local account creation.
   • Create a local account with username: Enter a preferred username here to pre-fill the setup.
6. Click OK and confirm the warning that the USB drive will be formatted. Wait for the process to complete.

Step 2: Configuring the BIOS Boot Priority

With the bootable media ready, we need to instruct the computer to start from the USB drive rather than the internal hard drive.

1. Restart your computer.
2. As soon as the manufacturer’s logo appears, press the designated BIOS Key repeatedly. This varies by manufacturer but is most commonly F12, DEL, or ESC.
3. Once in the BIOS/UEFI interface, navigate to the Boot menu or Boot Priority section.
4. Locate your USB drive in the list of devices and move it to the top of the boot order.
5. Save Changes and Exit. The system will reboot and load the Tiny11 installer.

Step 3: The Installation and Partition Management

The Tiny11 installation wizard appears identical to the standard Windows 11 setup. Please follow these instructions carefully, especially during the partition selection phase, to prevent accidental data loss.

1. Select your preferred Language and Keyboard layout, then click Next.
2. Accept the license terms.
3. On the “Which type of installation do you want?” screen, select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
4. You will now see a list of all storage drives and partitions.
   • Caution: You must identify the partition containing your current Windows installation. It is typically the largest partition labeled Primary (e.g., Drive 1 Partition 2).
   • Do not modify any partition that you recognize as your data storage (D: drive) or recovery partition (e.g., Drive 0 Partition 1) unless you specifically intend to remove them.
5. Select the Windows Partition and click Delete.
6. The deleted space will now appear as Unallocated Space. Select this unallocated space and click New -> Apply -> OK. Windows will automatically create the necessary system and recovery partitions.
7. Select the newly created Primary partition and click Next.

The file copy and installation process will now begin. This is where Tiny11’s efficiency becomes apparent. A standard Windows installation can take anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour. My Clean Install Tiny11 completed in just under 11 minutes.

Step 4: First Boot and Post-Installation Notes

Once the installation finalizes, the system will reboot. Because of the customization we applied via Rufus, you will bypass the lengthy Cortana introduction and the Microsoft Account login prompt, arriving directly at a clean desktop.
