Beta testers shared their impressions of Starlink – speeds up to 175 Mbps despite snowfall, wind and freezing temperatures

Reddit users shared impressions of the Starlink satellite Internet, which is still at the stage of closed beta testing – beta testers are delighted that the high-speed Internet from Elon Musk works stably despite bad weather – strong winds, sub-zero temperatures, and snowfalls.

Recall that the Starlink closed beta test started on October 27 and is now limited to the northern United States and southern Canada, including rural areas of Washington state. Starlink Internet is now available to select users in the US and Canada who have received an invitation to participate in the beta test. The set of equipment (phased antenna array, mounts, and Wi-Fi router) costs $ 499, and the subscription fee for the service is $ 99 per month. Equipment installation and configuration is as simple as possible and now takes 5 minutes, but the company promises to reduce this time to 3 minutes. How many people are participating in the beta test is unknown, but applications sent 700 thousand people.

During the beta testing phase, SpaceX claimed speeds from 50 Mbps to 150 Mbps with delays ranging from 20 to 40 ms, warning of possible interruptions. In fact, the speed was even higher. At least judging by the reviews of the first users.

One of the Starlink beta testers based in the North of the USA told the BI publication that download speeds are faster at lower temperatures. He claims that at 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 11 Celsius), the average download speed reached 175 Mbps, while in colder weather, it dropped to 150-160 Mbps.

The vast majority of Reddit Starlink community users who shared test results in November report download speeds above 150 Mbps. Current record – 208.63 Mbps recorded in Seattle.

According to Starlink beta testers, neither average snowfall, high humidity, nor snow that falls on the terminal and melts on its surface does not affect the service in any way.

At the same time, a user in the North of the USA who left the terminal on the street in a snowstorm (seven centimeters of snow fell in an hour, and the wind speed reached 80 km / h) reported a decrease in the download speed to 20-30 Mbps and the upload speed to 3-4 Mbps.

In Ukraine, the average download speed with fixed broadband is 40 Mbit / s, the average upload speed is 37 Mbit / s, and the average latency is 3 ms (nPerf research data at the end of 2019). If we talk about the mobile Internet, the average download speed, depending on the operator, varies from 13.79 Mbit / s (lifecell) to 19.04 Mbit / s (Vodafone), downloads – 7.88-8.93 Mbit / s, and the latency is at the level of 50 ms (data from the nPerf study for the first half of 2020).

  • The official launch of Starlink in the US and Canada should take place before the end of 2020. In mid-2021, SpaceX expects to launch Starlink in India, and deployment in Europe will begin after obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals for specific countries – tentatively in February-March 2021.
