The possibility of using Android Auto OS wirelessly has been talked about since 2018. Although some models of smartphones and cars support this feature, we are talking about a limited number, so this is rather an exception to the rule.
Apparently, the situation will change with the release of the new version of the Android 11 operating system. Google is expected to add wireless support for any devices running the latest version of the operating system and equipped with a Wi-Fi module with a 5 GHz frequency range. This is stated on the page with answers to frequently asked questions. Note, however, that the availability of this capability in the EU will depend on local regulations for the use of the 5 GHz frequency band in vehicles.
So far, the systems’ wireless connectivity with Android Auto is mostly limited to Google’s own Pixel and Nexus smartphones, as well as a small number of Samsung Galaxy devices. The list of compatible models has been gradually expanding since the feature debuted in Android 9 Pie. You can check if the car or stereo system supports a wireless connection via Android Auto.
